Emergency Services in the Regional District of Mount Waddington

Working in partnership with BCEHS, RCMP and North Island 9-1-1 to keep our communities safe.

The Regional District of Mount Waddington (RDMW) works closely with emergency response partners to support public safety across our communities.

Emergency medical services, policing and 911 call answer services are delivered through provincial and regional partners. RDMW collaborates with these agencies to ensure coordination, preparedness and effective response during emergencies and disasters.

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS)

Emergency medical response in the RDMW is provided by BC Emergency Health Services

BCEHS delivers:

  • 911 Ambulance dispatch
  • Paramedic response services
  • Air ambulance coordination
  • Interfacility patient transfers

RDMW works alongside BCEHS during large scale emergencies to support coordination, logistics, and community level emergency management through our Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)

Policing services within the RDMW are provided by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) through local detachments.

The RCMP are responsible for:

  • Law enforcement
  • Criminal investigations
  • Traffic safety
  • Emergency response coordination for police related incidents

During emergencies, the RCMP work within the Incident Command System (ICS) framework and coordinate with RDMW Emergency Management to support public safety and evacuation operations when required.

North Island 911

911 call answer services for the region are provided through North Island 911, which ensures emergency calls are routed to the appropriate dispatch agency (police, fire, or ambulance).

When you call 911:

  • Your call is answered by a trained call taker
  • The nature and location of the emergency are confirmed
  • The call is transferred to the appropriate dispatch agency

North Island 911 plays a critical role in ensuring emergency calls are processed quickly and accurately.

TIPS to Reducing Accidental 9-1-1 Calls

North Island 9-1-1 is asking residents to:

  • Protect your cell phone by locking it and storing it carefully.
  • Never give phones to children to play with or use as toys.
  • Ensure 9-1-1 is not pre-programmed into mobile or landline phones.
  • If you dial 911 accidentally, stay on the line so they can ensure you are okay.

Looking Ahead: Next Generation 911 (NG911)

Canada is transitioning to Next Generation 911 (NG911), which will modernize emergency communications across the country.

NG911 will:

  • Improve call routing reliability
  • Enhance local accuracy
  • Enable future text and data capabilities
  • Strengthen system resilience

RDMW is monitoring NG911 implementation to ensure local emergency planning and coordination remain aligned with evolving provincial and federal standards.

RDMW’s Role in Emergency Services

While the RDMW does not operate ambulance or police services directly, we:

  • Coordinate emergency management planning
  • Operate the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during disasters
  • Support evacuation planning and public information
  • Work with partner agencies to strengthen regional resilience

Our role is to ensure communities are supported before, during, and after emergencies.

Know When to Call 911

Call 911 for life threatening emergencies only. For non-emergency police matters, contact your local RCMP detachment Non-Emergency line.
